The 2021-22 college football bowl season continues with a New Year’s Six matchup to close out the slate on New Year’s Day. The No. 7 Baylor Bears (11-2) take on the No. 8 Ole Miss Rebels (10-2) in the Allstate Sugar Bowl at the Caesars Superdome in New Orleans. Ole Miss, in its second year under Lane Kiffin, completed its first-ever 10-win regular season with a 31-21 win over rival Mississippi State on Nov. 25. The Rebels are looking for their third straight bowl win; they beat Indiana, 26-20, in the Outback Bowl a year ago. Baylor, under second-year coach Dave Aranda, won the Big 12 with an upset 21-16 win over Oklahoma State in the Big 12 Championship Game. The Bears won three straight bowl games under three different head coaches from 2015 to 2018 but dropped their last bowl appearance (a 26-14 loss to Georgia in the Sugar Bowl two years ago).

The two schools have not met since Sept. 6, 1975, when Baylor won, 20-10.

Ole Miss is a 1.5-point favorite, according to FanDuel Sportsbook. The over/under is set at 55.5 points.

Baylor has a 15-18-2 record overall versus SEC opponents.

13 Rushing TDs for Ole Miss RB Snoop Conner and 11 for Ole Miss QB Matt Corral in 2021. This is the first time that the Rebels have had two players with at least 10 rushing TDs in the same season. Conner is one off the school single-season record for rushing TDs. Kayo Dottley in 1949, Archie Manning in 1969, Deuce McAllister in 2000 and Brandon Bolden in 2010 ran for 14 TDs each for Ole Miss.

21 Consecutive Baylor games have included at least one takeaway for the Bears’ defense. Baylor has intercepted 16 passes and recovered eight of its opponents’ fumbles this season. Ole Miss has the fewest turnovers in the SEC this season, losing five fumbles and throwing four interceptions.

25 Consecutive Ole Miss games have featured at least 20 points for the Rebels, the longest such streak in school history. The Rebels most recently failed to score at least 20 points in a game on Nov. 2, 2019, in a 20-14 loss to Auburn.

Baylor’s bowl history started with a 20-7 victory over Wake Forest in the Dixie Bowl in Birmingham on Jan. 1, 1949. The Bears’ most recent bowl was a 26-14 loss to Georgia in the Sugar Bowl on Jan. 1, 2020. Baylor defeated Tennessee 13-7 on Jan. 1, 1957, in its only other Sugar Bowl appearance.

119 Rushing yards are needed by Baylor RB Abram Smith to break the school’s single-season record. Smith has 1,429 yards and 12 TDs on 232 rushing attempts in 2021. Terrance Ganaway set the Baylor record with 1,547 rushing yards in 2011. With eight 100-yard rushing games in 2021, Smith is tied for the school single-season record established by Walter Abercrombie in 1980.

The No. 6 Baylor Bears (11-2) battle the No. 8 Ole Miss Rebels (10-2) Saturday in the Allstate Sugar Bowl at the Caesars Superdome in New Orleans. The kickoff is scheduled for 8:45 p.m. ET and the game airs on ESPN.

Baylor enters on a four-game winning streak (3-1 ATS), which includes a 21-16 thrilling victory over the No. 9 Oklahoma State Cowboys in the Big XII title game Dec. 4.

The Bears are led by LB Jalen Pitre, who won 2021 Big XII Defensive Player of the Year, and the conference’s second-leading rusher in RB Abram Smith. Baylor is 9-4 ATS and 6-7 O/U with the 28th-toughest schedule, according to USA TODAY’s Jeff Sagarin.

Ole Miss has won seven of the past eight (6-2 ATS) – including four straight – with the latest being a 31-21 victory over the Mississippi State Bulldogs Nov. 25, in the Egg Bowl.
